We are building the T5 Terminal for offshore wind farms
The NDI Group is implementing a contract in the area of the Baltic Hub Container Terminal in Gdańsk. The construction includes the construction of the deep-water T5 Terminal, commissioned by Istrana, a special purpose vehicle of the Polish Development Fund.
The construction will involve the construction of two transshipment quays, a Ro-Ro station with mooring and fender dolphins, and a storage and manoeuvring yard with a total area of approx. 21 ha. For the first 10-15 years, the terminal will function as a base for the installation needs of offshore wind farms (Offshore Wind Supply Base – OWSB).
The outbound (export) quay, approximately 450 m long, will be adapted to handle jack-up vessels used for the assembly of offshore wind farms, while the inbound (inport) quay, approximately 350 m long, together with the Ro-Ro station, approximately 105 m long, will be used to receive deliveries of offshore wind farm components.
Within the planned storage yard, works related to the preliminary assembly of individual wind farm components will be carried out, which components will then be loaded onto vessels in the loading zone along the Outbound quay. The remaining part of the storage yard will house storage areas and provide space for amenity and administrative buildings that will serve to support logistics processes and those related to the assembly of wind farms.
The terminal surface for the OWSB phase will be made of crushed rock material to enable flexible storage of wind turbine components, as well as to enable the operation of heavy equipment for assembly and transshipment work. Due to the concern for the natural environment, the tightness of the surface will be ensured by the use of screens made of geosynthetic materials. Surface water will be drained through a network of designed drainage systems and a storm sewer system equipped with pre-treatment elements.
The construction will include building of the necessary electrical, telecommunications and sewage networks needed to service the amenity and office buildings and equip the quays.
After the completion of the offshore wind farm installation campaign in the Polish Special Economic Zone, it is possible to transform the terminal for the container transshipment function. This will be preceded by detailed business analyses.
The project also includes the execution of dredging and reclamation works, with a total volume estimated at over 3 million m3 of soil. The NDI Group will supply approximately 15,000 tons of sheet piles and steel piles for the construction of quays and dolphins. The reinforced concrete structure of the quay will be supported on drilled piles, and the anchoring will be made in the form of steel flap anchors. The total volume of structural concrete is estimated at 65,000 m3. Additionally, the General Contractor will supply and install approximately 300,000 tons of stone aggregate needed to complete the surface.
– In the first quarter of 2025, we completed 100% of the dredging works planned under the Contract. At the end of January this year we started the piling works, and in March, the reclamation works. We are currently continuing pile-driving and excavation work. We deliver materials needed for further stages of work, including the construction of aggregate surfaces – says Paweł Śpiewak, Deputy Project Director at the NDI Group.
The opening of further jobsites is planned for April and May this year. First, the anchors for the quay walls will be installed, and then piling and reinforced concrete works are planned to begin. The planned completion date of the investment project is the third quarter of 2026.
