Record contract for NDI. The longest road tunnel in Poland will be built on the S6 route

We have signed a contract for the construction of the third section of the S6 Police–Goleniów expressway, which is a key part of the Western Bypass of Szczecin. The 23.4 km long investment project, which also includes the construction of a tunnel under the Oder River, will be carried out by a consortium of NDI and DOGUS companies. The value of the contract amounts to over PLN 5.3 bn.

The most interesting and at the same time the most demanding part of this section of the Szczecin Western Bypass will be the tunnel under the Odra River, bored using a giant TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine). Two-aisle tubes, nearly 5 km long, will be built near Police, and each aisle will be dedicated to one direction of traffic, making it the longest road tunnel in Poland. At its deepest point, the tunnel will be 51 meters below the surface.

The third section will start approximately 1.5 km west of the planned Police road junction. A road circuit with the Tunnel Management Centre will be located in the area of the junction. Just behind the junction, the entrance to the road tunnel will begin, with the tunnel next to the Chemical Plant facilities and under the railway lines, the DW 114 provincial road, the port areas in Police and the Oder River. After reaching ground level, the route will run towards the town of Święta, bypassing it from the north, and then will lead north of the town of Modrzewie, where a road junction will be built at the intersection with DW 111.

The investment project includes the construction of two road junctions and the expansion of the Goleniów Północ junction, which will be adapted to new routes towards the planned S6. The scope of work also includes the construction of 22 new bridge structures, which will be designed to enable animal migration.

The completion of the project will be of strategic importance not only for the entire Szczecin agglomeration, but also for Western Pomerania. Once all three sections of the Szczecin Western Bypass are completed, the new route will relieve the current route of the A6, S3 and S6 roads, bypassing Szczecin from the south and east. Additionally, a significant part of car traffic will be moved out of the centre of Szczecin, including transport serving the chemical plant in Police.

“The commencement of our activity coincided with a time of political and economic changes. We all see how Poland has developed over the years and we have also changed with it. Our country has been able to develop thanks to companies like NDI that helped throughout the process. Over the years we have gained competences and experience. Thanks to this, today we can take another step forward. This project is an opportunity not only for us to develop further competences, but also for all our partners, designers, suppliers, subcontractors, and above all, the residents of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. Together with our consortium partner, we declare that we will make every effort to ensure that the project is a success. We are counting on good, fruitful and positive cooperation with our Investor, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, including the Investor’s supervision staff. Given the duration of this project, we have a long road ahead of us, a long tunnel at the end of which a happy ending awaits us.” – says Małgorzata Winiarek-Gajewska, President of the Management Board of NDI.

The opening of the full ring around Szczecin is planned after the tunnel under the Oder is opened for traffic, which will take place in 2033. The investment project is being carried out as part of the Government National Road Construction Programme. The investor is the General Directorate for

National Roads and Motorways, Szczecin Branch, and the General Contractor of the works is a consortium of NDI (Leader) and DOGUS companies.
