The reconstruction of the Indian Quay has been completed

The comprehensive reconstruction of the Indian Quay in the Port of Gdynia has been completed. The investment included, among other things, the construction of a new, widened and deepened quay, the modernisation of road and rail infrastructure, the extension of the grain transhipment flyover and the modernisation of quay equipment, which significantly increases the transhipment capacity of the grain terminal and improves cooperation with the liquid products terminal.

The reconstruction included the erection of a new pile wall with a quay slab, dredging works, reconstruction of the railway and road system, new quay equipment and a receiving basket. The existing flyovers were extended and the transhipment stations serving ships were relocated.

A total of 537 running metres of quay were rebuilt. – First of all, we widened the quay by 6 metres and deepened the bottom at the quay to 15.5 metres, which will allow access to the quay for the largest bulk carriers arriving at the Port of Gdynia. The new quay wall was made of anchored steel tubular piles, with sheet piling sunk between them. Virtually all new components of the rebuilt infrastructure have been completed. We have also built new networks, including storm water drainage, sanitary sewage, water supply, power and telecommunications networks – said Wojciech Krugły, Deputy Project Director at NDI Group.

A completely new railway and road surface has been constructed, with a total length of 1,615 metres for a single track. Sixteen ordinary turnouts have been built, adapted to work in port conditions. New hydrotechnical equipment was also installed on the new fender line, including fenders and mooring bollards, which protect the quay and the ship during mooring. In addition, the steel structure of the gantry crane, which is located along the quay and is used for transhipment of grain products, was also rebuilt.

– We also carried out work within the historic elevator, i.e. the grain warehouse, which was built in the 1930s. The modernisation of this trestle will enable future users of the grain quay to increase the volume of transhipments – added the Deputy Project Director.

A receiving hopper was also built within the grain terminal, which will be used to receive and load grain products.

One of the challenges faced by the construction team during the reconstruction was the coordination of work with the transhipment operations carried out by the Chane terminal. This is a terminal that handles the transhipment of liquid products. It was a certain difficulty in terms of implementation, but together with the Employer, we managed to overcome all inconveniences so that the work of both teams could be carried out without any conflicts,” summarised Wojciech Krugły.

This is yet another successful investment that the NDI Group has been able to carry out for Zarząd Morskiego Portu Gdynia.
