The alteration of the historic „Groddeck” granaries into the Renaissance by Marriott hotel in Gdańsk is underway

In Gdańsk, on the Motława River, advanced reconstruction and revitalization of the 17th-century granaries „Duży Groddeck” and „Mały Groddeck” are underway. A five-star hotel is being built within the historic walls, complemented by new wings on the north and south sides.

A demanding but very interesting hotel investment project is being implemented in the very heart of Gdańsk. The adaptation of the historic granaries „Duży Groddeck” and „Mały Groddeck” into a luxury Renaissance by Marriott hotel is underway. The project not only involves the revitalization of historic buildings, but also the construction of two new parts – from the side of the Krowi Bridge (part „A”) and from the side of Podwale (part „C”).

All elements of the complex are designed as a coherent whole – individual parts of the hotel are connected by internal passages, creating a uniform, functional structure. The historic structures will house, among other things, conference rooms, a restaurant, and hotel rooms. A modern spa & wellness area with a swimming pool is being built in the newly built part on the Podwale side, while a skybar with a view of the Motława River has been designed on the roof on the side of the Krowi Bridge.

– Currently, shell works are being carried out. On the new parts we are in the process of building the sixth floor. Demolition work is underway in the historic granaries, after which a new internal structure will be built. In the next stage, we will begin the construction of pitched roofs and the installation of window and door joinery. The completion of the closed shell stage is planned for the middle of next year – says Ewa Kruszyńska, Construction Works Manager at the NDI Group.

The investment project is being carried out in the very centre of Gdańsk, in an area under conservation protection and in the immediate vicinity of one of the main tourist routes. Therefore, logistics activities have been optimized by using the Motława River for the delivery of construction materials – some of them are stored on special pontoons. Due to the proximity of the waterfront, it was also necessary to protect the construction site against possible water inflow.

Innovative solutions were used in the historic parts. The steel and wooden structure, which is not placed directly on the ground but is suspended and supported by upper steel spans, enabled the dismantling of the internal ceilings and walls without disturbing the historic external walls. Previously, the existing foundations were also reinforced using the sub-floor method in the newly built parts of the hotel, and then, using the same method, over 100 piles were installed in its historic part, which

allowed for the completion of most of the foundation slab before the demolition of the old structure began.

Thanks to this investment project, the historic buildings will regain a new function and become part of a space that fits perfectly into the historical fabric of the city.
