Construction of an intermodal terminal begins at the Port of Gdynia Logistics Centre
Another investment under the management of the NDI Group is starting in the Port of Gdynia: the construction of a modern intermodal terminal. The project will significantly increase the region’s transport capacity by connecting various modes of transport. Implementation will take 18 months.
The scope of works includes the construction of a railway siding, transshipment yards and new technical infrastructure, including electricity, telecommunications and storm sewerage networks. It is also planned to reconstruct the existing water supply, sanitary and heating installations, including the construction of a steel overpass for the heating pipelines, and to implement a modern rainwater retention system.
The terminal will be equipped with infrastructure enabling efficient handling of intermodal transport, including a railway ramp, as well as with security systems. A retention tank and internal roads will also be built to facilitate logistics within the site.
– We have an intermodal terminal to build, which will enable the transshipment of containers from vehicles, cars to rail vehicles and vice versa. The main scope of works to be performed includes 31.5 thousand m2 of concrete surface, 2623 m of single track and 5 turnouts. We will also carry out industry-specific works, including electrical power works, construction of telecommunications installations and the „Oczy Portu” [“Eyes of the Port”] camera system. The storm sewer system needs to be built, the existing sanitary sewer header needs to be altered, and the heating header needs to the altered, too – says Wojciech Krugły, Deputy Project Director and Railway Works Manager.
One of the challenges will be the reconstruction of two sanitary header pipelines and two heating header pipelines that conflict with the newly designed track system. Their alteration will enable the connection of the newly built siding with the track system of Polish Railway Lines.
– A few years ago, the NDI Group and the team I have the pleasure of working with successfully completed two storage yards in the neighbouring area with a total area of 18 ha of concrete pavement. The construction of the intermodal terminal will be the culmination of this investment project and will enable the full functionality of this system, i.e. the implementation of intermodal transport assumptions – adds Wojciech Krugły.
As part of the project, an independent certification company will assess the infrastructure’s compliance with EU standards, and positive verification will allow for the terminal’s full potential to be used.
The new investment project is another step in the development of the port, which will become an even more competitive transshipment point, improve the efficiency of freight transport and thus increase its importance in the region. The investor of the project is the Zarząd Morskiego Portu Gdynia S.A., and the value of the contract amounts to over PLN 65 million gross.
