The investment by the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow is coming to an end. The NDI Group is finalising its implementation
The new teaching building of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow is entering the final stage of implementation. The investment carried out by the NDI Group, comprising a five-storey building with an underground car park and a connection to the existing library, has already undergone the most important acceptance procedures. From the very beginning of the project, particular emphasis was placed on functionality, comfort and modern technological solutions.
The NDI Group has completed key works on the new teaching building of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow. The building, consisting of four floors and an underground car park, has been connected to the existing library by an above-ground link. From the outset, the project aimed to create a functional and friendly space that would meet the needs of students and university staff.
The project was divided into two stages. The first stage included earthworks, reinforced concrete and structural works, roofing, installation of external facades and construction of the facade. The second stage involved finishing works, electrical, telecommunications and sanitary installations, as well as landscaping around the building.
The well-thought-out interior layout, wide corridors and staircases, natural materials and warm colours create an environment conducive to everyday use. One of the most challenging elements of the project was the main auditorium with 435 seats, equipped with an advanced audiovisual system, facilities for interpreters and a lighting and sound control room. Materials with precisely selected acoustic parameters were used in this room, and the process of designing and refining the wall cladding took many months.
Modern technological systems play an important role in the functioning of the facility. ‘Lighting is controlled from the lighting control room, but it can also be controlled centrally via the BMS (Building Management System), which is an integrated platform for centralised monitoring and management of technical installations in buildings,’ said Michał Stachoń, Project Manager at NDI Group.
This makes it possible to fully adapt the conditions in the building to the needs of users – from complete blackout to scenes emphasising the geometry of the interior. The facility also features installations responsible for effective energy management. The gas-fired system simultaneously provides heat, cooling and 100 kW of electricity, which is supplemented by a 50 kW photovoltaic installation mounted on the roof. All these solutions are supervised and configured via the BMS, ensuring full control over the building’s operation.
The floor area of the new teaching building exceeds 2,800 m², its volume is 61,000 m³, and its usable area is over 10,500 m².
– The construction was a challenge from the very beginning. The variety and number of finishing, construction and installation materials, as well as the complexity of their configuration, meant that mastering this complex organism required the full attention and commitment of the entire team from the very beginning. After more than two and a half years of implementation and good cooperation with the investor, we are nearing the end,” concluded Michał Stachoń.
Thanks to the efficient coordination of work, the commitment of the team and the partnership with the investor, the new teaching building of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow is entering its final stage and will soon be fully operational.
