The completion of the DK91 reconstruction is near
On the Zawada–Siedlec Duży section, there are ongoing intensive works related to the reconstruction of National Road No. 91. The works are proceeding according to schedule, and the progress on both carriageways allows us to be optimistic about the completion of the investment within the planned deadline. The modernisation will significantly improve safety and comfort of travel on this important section in Silesia.
The reconstruction of DK91 (i.e. the old ‘Jedynka’) on the Zawada–Siedlec Duży section is being carried out within the existing road lane and includes the modernisation of a 5.5-kilometre section of the route. The aim of the investment is to adapt the road to a load capacity of 115 kN/axle, improve safety and calm traffic, as well as increase capacity and comfort.
The works include the modernisation of a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. Connections to side roads and nearby infrastructure are provided by rebuilt intersections and public exits. The project also includes the installation of noise barriers and the modernisation of seven culverts.
On the right carriageway leading towards Katowice (where traffic currently flows), all possible works planned for the current stage have been completed, with the exception of the reconstruction of gas collisions and the laying of the SMA wearing course, which will be carried out in the new year.
On the left carriageway, the entire structure, horizontal and vertical markings, traffic safety devices and finishing works have been completed along almost the entire length. All additional works not originally included in the documentation but necessary for the proper implementation of key elements of the investment have also been completed.
Currently, the main focus of the works is on the reconstruction of gas pipelines that collide with road infrastructure in Siedlec Mały and Romanów. Efficient cooperation between the General Contractor, Supervision and Investor enabled the works to start quickly and be coordinated efficiently.
“We plan to complete all work on the left carriageway by the end of the year, and in the new year, weather permitting, we want to continue work on the right carriageway so that drivers can use the modernised road in early spring,” said Adrian Pluta, Construction Manager at NDI Group.
This section of the DK91 has long been in need of comprehensive modernisation. It is one of the oldest roads in the region. Before the war, it had a clinker brick surface, and the last major modernisation work was carried out in the 1970s, which gave it the colloquial name ‘Gierkówka’. The current reconstruction involved the complete removal of the old structural layers, which is why close cooperation with, among others, the Provincial Conservator of Monuments was necessary at every stage.
The investor of the project is the Katowice branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. The contract value exceeds PLN 119 million.
