Reconstruction of National Road 94 in Olkusz – traffic shifted to the new carriageway

In early February, traffic on the section of DK94 undergoing reconstruction was shifted to the southern roadway, allowing work to begin on the northern roadway. The work includes, among other things, the construction of storm sewers, noise barriers, and the key WD-03 structure with ramps. New underpasses are being built in place of the demolished crossings. The coming months will see the continuation of intensive road and bridge construction work.

As a reminder, the reconstruction of National Road No. 94 in Olkusz (Małopolskie Province) covers the section from Grodzisko on Staromiejska Street to the intersection of Centralna Street and Pakuska Street. The project involves widening the road and upgrading its structure to KR6 traffic category, i.e., for very heavy traffic, which will increase the pavement’s load-bearing capacity to 11.5 t/axle.

In 2025, the new southern carriageway was constructed and traffic was gradually shifted onto it. At the beginning of February 2026, it was redirected to another section (from km 297+100 to 297+400), allowing works to begin on the next section of the northern carriageway. Demolition of old pavements and construction of the new road structure are ongoing, alongside bridge and utility works.

– Already in 2025, two new halves of pedestrian underpasses were built on the southern side, along with a footbridge, and the northern carriageway was secured in the excavation area for a reinforced concrete viaduct. Together with retaining walls, it will enable collision-free passage of DK94 beneath the structure. After traffic was redirected, we began demolishing the old underpasses on the northern side and prepared the area for new ones – said Tomasz Kawalec, Site Manager at NDI.

On the WD-3 viaduct on the southern side, excavation for foundations has been completed. – The first of three foundations has already been concreted, and reinforcement works are ongoing for the next one. In this area, a palisade wall has also been constructed, serving as retaining structures for the approach ramps to WD-3, followed by cornices that strengthen the structure and protect it from damage. Currently, road works are underway for the construction of slip roads running alongside the cornices – he added.

A pedestrian footbridge over DK94 has also been completed, and elevators will soon be installed in two prepared shafts—planned for March 2026—after which finishing works on the footbridge will begin. NDI is also continuing the installation of street lighting along the entire reconstructed section and resolving conflicts with telecommunications infrastructure.

The value of the investment is nearly PLN 217.5 million. NDI S.A., acting as the General Contractor, is responsible for preparing the as-built documentation and obtaining the occupancy permit on behalf of the Investor—the Kraków branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
