Another milestone achieved at Terminal T5

Another major phase of the investment project has been successfully completed at the Terminal T5 construction site. Reinforced concrete works for the outbound, inbound, ro-ro and temporary quays have been delivered within the contractual timeframe, while advanced drainage, electrical and road works are being carried out in parallel.

In recent months, key works related to the execution of the reinforced concrete structures for the quays have been concluded. This was one of the most critical stages of the project’s delivery, requiring tight coordination of structural works and the involvement of numerous construction teams.

‘Another milestone – the third one already – is behind us. The Terminal T5 quays, namely outbound, inbound, ro-ro and temporary, were completed within the contract schedule, without any delays. For this phase, which has been underway since October 2025, we used 36,000 m3 of concrete and nearly 3,700 tonnes of steel. At the peak of this construction stage, over 150 site workers and a dozen engineering staff members were working on site. Thanks to the excellent synergy of the NDI team and seamless cooperation with our subcontractors, the deadline was fully met,’ says Jacek Pawlak, Hydrotechnical Works Manager at NDI Group.

Concurrently, the investment is entering its next phase, which involves the construction of the drainage and utility infrastructure indispensable for the entire terminal’s operations. Networks and systems that will ultimately handle water and wastewater management, as well as environmental protection on the premises, are currently being installed. ‘We have commenced works on the installation of systems comprising stormwater drainage, foul sewerage, water supply and fire mains. We have already completed the tie-ins at Terminal T3, which were critical for connecting with the new infrastructure. Ahead of us is the installation of treatment systems reaching up to 6 metres below target ground level. These include an oil-water separator (to remove hydrocarbon pollutants) and a silt trap (to retain sediment and suspended solids), which are being prepared on the outbound quay,’ emphasises Patrycja Maron, Site Engineer at NDI Group.

Advanced works are also underway regarding the power supply infrastructure. Construction has commenced on the terminal’s lighting system and an extensive cable duct network, which will ultimately service all electrical installations across the facility.

‘We have entered the stage of constructing the terminal lighting, which involves the installation of lighting masts over 34 metres high. Ultimately, the entire terminal will be illuminated by 26 such masts. The electrical installation is based on a cable duct system made of 160 mm diameter pipes. A total of 135 km of these ducts is planned, with approximately 25% of the entire network completed to date,’ says Robert Kondratowicz, Electrical Works Engineer at NDI Group.

Equally important are the works related to the execution of the terminal pavement and the preparation of the subgrade for future operations. Given the facility’s role as a staging and assembly yard for offshore wind farm components, a significant portion of the work currently focuses on material deliveries and the construction of the structural pavement layers.

‘We are currently importing aggregate, including for the upper pavement layer, which arrives to us by sea. In total, we have over 300,000 tonnes of these aggregates to incorporate into the structure, alongside 4 km of drainage pipes and practically a million square metres of geosynthetics, including 200,000 m2 of separation geomembrane. Due to the scale of the venture, it was necessary to stockpile a large quantity of materials beforehand, which is why logistics is of paramount importance in projects of this nature,’ points out Paweł Śpiewak, Deputy Project Director at NDI Group.

A rapid pace of work is being maintained across the investment site, with all teams involved in the project’s delivery operating in full coordination. The project is being carried out on behalf of Istrana and is co-financed by European funds under the National Recovery Plan (KPO) and by the Polish Development Fund (PFR). The General Contractor is the NDI Group.
