AGH invests in the future. The S-1 building will become a research and education centre

Right in the middle of the AGH University of Science and Technology campus in Kraków, construction of the S-1 building is underway. Once completed, the facility will become a modern research and education centre, with laboratories and student spaces. Reinforced concrete works have recently been completed, electrical, telecommunications and sanitary systems are being installed, and construction will soon enter the finishing phase.

The S-1 building on the campus of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków is currently undergoing advanced modernisation and expansion works, carried out by the NDI Group. Once completed, it will become a modern, multi-functional space housing laboratories for implementing innovative projects, IT infrastructure, technical support, and spaces for academic and student communities, including the University Student Government Council. The building will also house, once again, a food court. The investment project responds to the needs of scientific research, education and the integration of academic activities, while also creating conditions conducive to the development of technology, including projects in the field of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

– We are finishing the stage of removing the formwork of the most characteristic part of the reinforced concrete structure of the S1 building, i.e. the overhang reaching almost 13 m beyond the last support. The overhang is achieved by using 8 reinforced concrete hangers, which transfer their force to the diagonal columns and then to the building structure. The overhang is 4 stories high, the weight of the reinforced concrete structure is nearly 700 tons, and after all the work is completed, it will be close to 1,000 tons – says Bartosz Miodunka, Construction Manager at the NDI Group.

Currently, reinforced concrete work has been completed at the construction site, and masonry work is also nearing completion. – We are carrying out roofing work and are at an advanced stage of facade work. We have started plastering work and soon screeds and other finishing works will also begin. Installation work is also underway on electrical, telecommunications and sanitary systems. In the coming months, deliveries of large equipment, such as air handling units, are planned – reports the Construction Manager.

The biggest challenge is definitely the issue of logistics, both in terms of construction work and transport. The investment project is located in the Kraków downtown, on very busy streets. The area for construction is small, so the deliveries for the building are made on an ongoing basis.

– In the coming month, work will begin on the construction of very large systems on the southern part of the site handed over for works, which will exclude its use. This makes logistics even more difficult, but we are managing it thanks to the commitment of the entire NDI staff working on this project, adds Bartosz Miodunka.

On the construction site, great emphasis was placed on preserving the existing greenery. The geometry of the overhang was designed to accommodate the tree located there, which posed a significant challenge in the process of constructing the formwork for the reinforced concrete structure. Thanks to the cooperation with the Investor, it was possible to save it – the tree adapted to the new conditions and grew fresh branches and leaves.

The facility will gain a new architectural structure and significantly increase its volume and functionality. After the alteration, the central part of the building will reach over 5,000 m² of usable area, including technical and communication areas, and the total area of the facility will exceed 6,000 m². The development area will be approximately 1,600 m². The building will have six floors – five above ground and one underground, and its height will be 22.5 m.

The project investor is the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.
