New quality of National Road No. 22
Over 10 kilometres of the rebuilt DK 22 not only feature a new surface, but also a number of solutions improving safety and comfort. The works were carried out while maintaining full traffic flow, which was one of the biggest challenges for the contractor. The investment has brought the road up to modern standards.
The route covered the section from Królewo Malborskie to the border between the Pomeranian and Warmian-Masurian provinces. The aim of the modernisation was to adapt the road to the required load-bearing capacity of 115 kN/axle and to ensure appropriate travel conditions for both local residents and heavy transport, which will contribute to reducing travel time and ensuring proper travel conditions.
The project also included the reconstruction of intersections, drainage, cycle paths, bus bays, lighting and technical infrastructure, which in many places required intervention beyond the original assumptions.
During the works, modern ground reinforcement technologies were used, including drainage columns made using the sand injection method and vertical drains. The use of these solutions allowed for the effective preparation of the ground for a road structure with high load-bearing capacity. The entire investment also took into account environmental protection requirements and the principles of sustainable development, resulting, for example, in the construction of sealed retention and evaporation tanks and noise barriers.
Despite difficult terrain conditions and numerous collisions with existing infrastructure, the project was successfully completed. The work was carried out in a limited road lane, without the possibility of setting up detours, which required precise logistics.
– Maintaining traffic on such a heavily used route while carrying out the works was the biggest technical and organisational challenge of the entire investment, but thanks to good organisation, we managed to complete all the works – said Wojciech Deputat, Construction Manager at the NDI Group.
In addition to DK 22, the construction and reconstruction also included short sections of district and municipal roads in the area of intersections, as well as a number of elements of the existing technical infrastructure.
The extension of DK 22 is an investment that responds to the real needs of road users. Safety, capacity and driving comfort have been improved, and the entire infrastructure has gained a completely new quality. The General Contractor for the works is the NDI Group, and the Investor is the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
