Construction of the Silesian Interdisciplinary Chemistry Centre begins
One of the state-of-the-art academic investment projects in Poland will soon begin on the premises of the University of Silesia. In place of the demolished buildings – a former gymnasium, swimming pool and administrative building – the Silesian Interdisciplinary Chemistry Centre will be built. A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the construction site. The eight-story building, including one underground floor, will become a modern place of research and education.
The facility will house spaces of a diverse nature – from large lecture halls and modern laboratories, through seminar and teaching zones, to a sports complex with four gyms. The whole will be complemented by a technology hall and advanced administrative and technical facilities. There will be an underground car park under the building.
One of the distinctive elements of the Silesian Interdisciplinary Chemistry Centre will be the roof – not only green, but also energetically active. It will be equipped with photovoltaic panels, and the energy produced will supply the building’s own needs.
The construction will be carried out in the city center, next to the functioning campus facilities and in the immediate vicinity of the Rawa River. The high level of groundwater, dense network of live utility systems and limited space for storing materials make this project a major construction challenge.
The investment project will be extremely technologically advanced, which will significantly improve the quality of educational conditions. The new Chemistry Centre will enable better matching of study programs to the needs of the labour market. Thanks to modern laboratories and classrooms, it will be possible to open new majors and more practical learning – so that students are as well prepared as possible for work after graduation.
Construction works will last until 2027, and the facility will be fully functional after it is equipped with specialist devices, technical systems and after the area landscaping is finished. The General Contractor of the construction works is the NDI Group, and the Investor is the University of Silesia in Katowice. The value of the project amounts to over PLN 239 million.
