The project was the next stage of works related to the construction of a fairway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Bay of Gdańsk. The task was to dredge an 8.2 thousand-meter-long fairway. This would allow ships with a length of 100 meters, a width of up to 20 meters and a draft of 4.5 meters to pass through.
The scope of the task included pre-treatment and silting works on the newly designed fairway – through the Vistula Lagoon, from the Elbląg River to the canal through the Vistula Spit (from kilometre 10+400 to kilometre 18+600).
In addition to dredging the fairway to at least 5 meters, it also had to be widened. In order for the ships to be able to pass each other and their sterns to turn freely, the width of the track was increased to 120 meters.
The widening was designed downstream the exit from the Elbląg Bay to the Vistula Lagoon. The designed arc radius for the reference vessel in the turn is 900 meters. The variable track gauges are connected by 600-meter-long transition sections. Due to traffic safety and ease of navigation, the fairway on the bend is located between straight sections connecting landmarks. These sections form the edges between which the bottom was dredged to a technical depth.
The sand extracted during the works was transported and placed on the Artificial Island, which was created as part of the first stage of construction of the fairway connecting the Lagoon and the Bay.
In addition to dredging works, navigation equipment was also provided: 35 pieces of buoys – 18 red, cylindrical ones on the left and 17 green, conical ones on the right.
