DK81/86 – percent of the work

40 percent of the work on the construction of one of the most important traffic junctions in the country is already behind us. The works on the extension of National Road 81 from the junction of the A4 motorway with National Road 86 to the extended junction of DK 81 of 86 (stage I) are carried out by a consortium led by the Sopot-based company NDI. One of the elements of the investment are new collision-free road junctions, which will allow to smooth the traffic, also increasing safety.

Thanks to the investment, the transit traffic will be separated from the inner-city traffic, so after the completion of the investment it will be smoother, without congestion. It is the largest road investment in Katowice since the construction of the tunnel under the Katowice roundabout, which has significantly improved the comfort of travelling through the City Centre of Katowice. It will be similar in Giszowiec, although today we are still observing advanced construction works here, which cause changes in traffic organization. Therefore, we would like to thank the people of Katowice and the inhabitants of the metropolis for their forbearance and patience in this matter – says Marcin Krupa, Mayor of Katowice and he points out that the improvement will be felt as early as this year, when the exit from the A4 motorway in the direction of Tychy to national road 86 will be available again.

DK 86 is one of the most frequently used roads in Poland. Prior to the start of the reconstruction, approximately 55,000 vehicles were passing through it every day. The investment being created for the benefit of the City of Katowice consists in the extension and reconstruction of the section of ul. Pszczyńska (DK-86), section of ul. 73. Pułku Piechoty (DK-81), the old course of ul. 73. Pułku Piechoty, construction of a road junction at the intersection of DK-86 (ul. Pszczyńska) from DK-81 (ul. 73. Pułku Piechoty), extension of Kolista junction and reconstruction of the section of ul. Kolista and ul. Karolinki.

– After the reconstruction two road junctions will be built here: The Giszowiec junction, which will distribute transit traffic in the direction of Tychy and Skoczów as far as the southern side is concerned, and to the north in the direction of Łódź and Gdańsk – says Tomasz Kawalec, site manager from NDI. As far as the current node is concerned, it will be expanded and will serve to distribute local traffic for the Giszowiec district and the Murcki Mine.

Currently, bituminous works are being carried out. There are also embankments and road constructions. In the section of national road DK81, a layer of basic foundation and curbs are laid and then bituminous layers are laid. On four engineering objects, finishing works are in progress, such as: kerb stones and disc anchors installation, pavement caps, cornice boards installation. The backfilling of bridgeheads and the construction of a retaining wall between the W2 and W3 engineering structures are also under way.

The DN1200mm water mains network, teletechnical networks, gas networks, district heating networks, 110kV high voltage and medium and low voltage networks are being rebuilt.  Work in this area requires excellent logistics and coordination as it takes place in a highly urbanised part of the city. The contractor often encounters unquoted and unmarked collisions with underground utilities networks, which in turn make it necessary to redesign and rebuild them to enable the works to be carried out.

– We work in the vicinity of the huge Giszowiec housing estate, the inhabitants of which must be provided with access to public transport stops or crossing through the construction site – says Tomasz Kawalec, site manager from NDI. We introduced the temporary traffic organisation. In the near future, we plan to complete the construction of the western roadway of ul. Pszczyńska (national road 86) and at the end of the year we would like to move traffic to the newly built western roadway and engineering facilities so that we can start work on the second roadway.

Construction in numbers:

Steel – 1460 tons of steel will be used during construction (60% already built in) Concrete – 14,500 m3, so much concrete will be used during construction (60% already built in) Weight – 82,000 tons will be used for bituminous works Load-bearing structure of W2 facility consists of steel girders of weight 283 tons (half of it was assembled as part of stage I of the works) Load-bearing structure of the W3 facility consists of steel girders weighing 495 tons (half of it was assembled as part of stage I of the works) Load-bearing structure of the W4 facility consists of 45 pre-fabricated pre-tensioned reinforced concrete beams of the T30 type (22 units were assembled) for the western roadways) The W7 bearing structure consists of 36 pre-fabricated pre-stressed reinforced concrete beams of T27 type (all of them were installed)

The cost of the investment is PLN 247.5 million, of which PLN 210 million is a subsidy under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme.
