Contract for the construction of a protective breakwater in the Port of Gdańsk signed!

The construction of a protective breakwater for the FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) terminal will consist in the construction of infrastructure providing access to the external port and enabling safe operation, including protection against waves, of the liquefied natural gas regasification unit.

The investment project of the Maritime Office in Gdynia includes, among others, the construction of a protective breakwater for the FSRU station together with the replacement of soil under the breakwater, the construction of navigation markings related to this infrastructure, as well as dredging and cleaning works on the approach fairway and the ship turning basin to the FSRU terminal. NDI Group will perform construction works on this project.

The body of water on which the breakwater will be built is located entirely within the boundaries of the sea port in Gdańsk. This is a sea port site. In the vicinity of the investment project area, there are existing hydrotechnical developments (breakwaters, navigation markings, quays) and port facilities operating nearby at the Northern Port. The new infrastructure will adapt the existing port complex to the new needs related to the location of the FSRU terminal in this area and will ensure further intensive development of the port.

– We are very pleased with the conclusion of this agreement and that once again, as a Polish company, a company from Pomerania, we can participate in the implementation of a project in the hydrotechnical area. First of all, it is important that we are participating in the implementation of an extremely strategic investment project in our country. We are ready to work and will start soon – said Małgorzata Winiarek-Gajewska, President of the NDI Group.

The FSRU terminal together with the construction of a protective breakwater is a key investment project in the field of energy security. It will ensure diversification of directions and sources of gas supplies for Poland and the Central and Eastern European region.

– Today we have taken a very important step towards increasing our energy security. Ports play an increasingly important role in ensuring Poland’s security. We are talking here about economic and military security, but also energy security. […] We will do everything to ensure that actions that strengthen our ports also strengthen our security. Today’s agreement is the best example of this – said Arkadiusz Marchewka, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Infrastructure.

The project will also play a significant role in the energy transformation process, ensuring increased supplies of natural gas for the needs of industry, power generation and heating in the transitional period of decarbonisation of the Polish economy.

– The new structure will enable further development of the port itself and will also create infrastructural conditions for the safe operation of the liquefied natural gas regasification unit. […] New infrastructure is a necessary condition for the development of further port functions. Without it, the operation of the floating terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk would not be possible – added Anna Stelmaszyk-Świerczyńska, Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

The breakwater will be located in the southern part of the Bay of Gdańsk, approx. 3 km from the sea shore, in the immediate vicinity of the fairway leading to the port of Gdańsk.

The planned project also involves ensuring the appropriate width and depth of the approach fairway to the FSRU terminal. This will require deepening a section of the water body from the main approach channel to the Northern Port up to the FSRU terminal, which will enable safe manoeuvring of the methane carrier and the FSRU unit, as well as a safe approach from the west.

Ultimately, the breakwater will be approximately 1,300 m long. Low quays will be located near both heads, equipped with bollards for mooring small vessels, e.g. tugboats.

– With this investment project, the Port of Gdańsk is able to demonstrate the implementation of strategic goals related to sustainable development. This is part of the construction of an energy centre in our port, which will serve current and future generations. Every zloty invested in access and terminal infrastructure pays off many times over – added Dorota Pyć, President of the Board of the Port of Gdańsk Authority S.A.

The value of the investment project amounts to almost PLN 800 million. Financing is provided from the state budget, as part of a multi-annual program. The planned completion date of the project is the end of 2027.
